Restaurants, Cafes in Newport RI

Whether you are looking for funky atmosphere, cheap eats to grab on the run or fine dining with a view, Newport has the place in town. A few recollections of establishments from the past.

I was once laughed at when I suggested to the owner of a building in the mid 80's that I thought a smoke free cafe/bar would be a cool place to have there in town. Coincidently in the very spot where Starbucks is currently at.

Fond memories of Tullah's

Back in the mid 70's, I would attend a late movie with a friend and we would visit Tullah's afterwards. An intimate gathering place two stories up on America's Cup Avenue. Tullah's elegant portrait was on the wall behind the counter and she herself would serve exotic concoctions of fresh fruit drinks, teas, coffee and desserts. We would play backgammon, chess or checkers while engaging conversation in a pleasant smoke free environment. It was welcome respite from the hectic paced routine of smoky bars that had overtaken the town.
